Question A little confussion....

Almost all the good hosting plans include free domain name registration.

Why some sites are selling domain names only. They are selling ordinary domain names at ordinary prices and domains are not the special popular domain names.

Is it a profitable business.

Well, actually - it is a low maintenance business. The whole domain name registration can be automated almost 99%. Once you have your platform running there is not that much work involved (other than normal business management (accounting, server administration, etc.)). You need to make sure you have enough funds to buy the names in wholesale or have your account funded properly. Support requests are usually seldom - especially if you have a really good FAQ area.

However - you will need a pretty high number to just live of domain name registrations. That's why if you look at GoDaddy and Enom - they offer tons of additional products and services.

I don't agree that all the good hosting plans include free domains. In fact, the ones that do include free domains are generally useless to me. If I used plans like those, I'd end up paying 50x higher prices and would have less flexibility to manage my websites.

I didn't say "we" I said that it would be useless to "me". My point is that a simple hosting account coming with the domain isn't suitable for everyone. In my situation, reseller accounts and dedicated servers are more suitable. For example, I host fifty websites on a reseller account at Clook.net, which cost me around thirty dollars a month. If I used 1&1's account with a free domain that cost $4.95 a month I'd save on the domains, but the hosting itself would cost $247.50 a month. OTOH, if you had one website, and only ever wanted that one website, the reseller account I use would be inappropriate.

Re:

The first domain name I bought about 6 years ago was $30 a year but the prices have dropped tremendously.

I buy domain names for $8.97 a year at dnbuy.com with intentions of using them one day so I don't need a host for them yet.

The host offer free domain name alwayz a trap. Why? Because the owner of the free domain is not you, They own the domain name, once you switch to other server. You can't bring it with you.

That's not always true. There are many hosts now that simply register the domain for you for free as an incentive to sign up with them. In fact, it's almost a requirement now for the shared hosting companies to be competitive. Most of these are registered through a separate registrar (the hosting company acts as a reseller) and can easily be transferred to a new host.
