Lightbulb Finding Advertisers

Okay, if you've read my other threads, I'm thinking about starting a magazine. It will be just like Entrepreneur Magazine and I want to find the same type of advertisers. Besides contacting the advertisers that advertised in Entrepreneur, who else would I turn to for advertisers? Is there a company that handles this? Possibly an advertising agency! (LightBulb Magically appears and kinda dims) Hehe, sounds good, but what do you all think?

I think you should distribute a couple of issues first to show the advertisers something physical.

If money is a factor, create a few samples. Let them know the magazine will be launched X date. Offer discount for signing up now.

Question Now I'm Confused...

I am able to acquire Entrepreneur Magazine's list of subscribers, I have people working on articles, and now just looking for a layout technician.

I've been told:
Corporations are always looking for another place to advertise. They spend money to offset corporate taxes while at the same time bringing in more customers. If you start the magazine, but charge a lot less, only to pay back your initial investment... they will come.

This is because I do not have much start-up capital to be able to put out a few issues to the whole of Entrepreneur's list of US subscribers... which is 535,863 active US subscriptions.

I always welcome second opinions. What do you think?

What will you do that's different?

Hi Redstylecorp,

I'm curious: why would you want to start a magazine that's just like one already out there?

If I were an advertiser, I would choose to advertise in Entrepreneur, rather than in an upstart that's just like Entrepreneur.

In your shoes I would ask myself how my concept for a magazine could be better than anything already out there. In other words, what's my competitive differentiation?

Just a suggestion....

Anita

Not just true for large busienss but also true for savy small business as well.

Anita you are obviously wise beyond your posts I agree. You should always do something to make yourself different, perhaps better than the compitition. If it is just like Entrepaneur, which I canceled my subscription to, then why as a busienss owner would I risk advertising with you? The only reason would be price... and you don't want to be the cheapest, you want to be the best. Right?

Being the cheapest is a great way to price yourself right out of business!

Question Holder Knute

Man you may be headed ninety miles an hour in to a brick wall. I would recommend that you stop dreaming of riches (yes I went to your web site) and get a grip and take a major reality check.

I've responded to other of your posts regarding the magazine and I may be guilty of fostering your blathering. You need to have at least a common understanding of life and business to be a success in today's world. You are clearly a novice or you would be asking the questions that you are.

One thing is very (crystal) clear and that is you don't know if there's a market for your magazine or not. That's like jumping off the high dive in the winter without bothing to check if there's water in the pool. So I would strongly recommend that you STOP! Make the effort to develop the concept of your mag only far enough to determine if there's a market for it. Saying its just like Entrepreneur is the kiss of DEATH! The magazine may very well be a copy, but you don't need to say it.

One step at a time.

Unlike Any Other

Well, I don't plan to make it just like Entrepreneur magazine, but akin. It will cover such issues as business start-up, mentoring, follow-thru and what not, but I will also discuss the reasons we, entrepreneurs, start a business.

The things we drool over:
1) Monster / luxury SUV's
2) Plasma TV's
3) Home electronics
4) Boats
5) blah blah blah blah

Yeah, really sounds just like it. But you guys make it sound like only one magazine can profit in each subject, entrepreneurship, in my case. Why would I choose to start a magazine just like Entrepreneur? Because regardless of there being many magazines on the same subjects, corporations want to spend more and more money on advertisement.

And when it comes to pricing, I won't price it so low that the corporation won't make any profit, instead, I will price it up to 25% lower than leading competitors to grow the business at first. Get me? Do you guys know how much money advertisers pay Entrepreneur Magazine to advertise?

For 1 Page, in Full Color, at the lowest costs: $20,180/issue.
For 1/3 Page, in Black/White, with highest discounts: $7,620/issue.
With more 100+ advertisers per issue, that REALLY adds up.

I don't know about YOU guys, but those figures make me drool with envy.

I may be heading 90 MPH into a brick wall, due to lack of knowledge/experience, but I will **** right through that wall using other people's time, knowledge, experience. I say forget the reality check because I set my own reality.

So who's going to join me in this venture? Any takers? LOL

I can gaurantee they didnt get those prices until they could show a paying circulation of some 200,000!

For 1 Page, in Full Color, at the lowest costs: $20,180/issue.
For 1/3 Page, in Black/White, with highest discounts: $7,620/issue.

good luck
