Creating Company Logo

Hello-

I'm working on our company logo. I have the drawing, but could some of you inform me of companies or software that could assist in creating it. I'm trying to be economical. I'm budgeting on a shoestring.

Angela, I recommend hiring a graphic design firm to design your corporate logo. A logo is an extremely valuable and important portion of your company's brand identity and will ultimately be a centerpiece for your marketing strategy. You'll want to treat it as such. The software needed to create mathematically-perfect vector art, like Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand, is expensive. Moreover, the learning curve is steep if you've had little or no experience with related products. It's only cost-effective to design your corporate logo if you have what it takes to produce professional-quality work.

Hi.Angela

When deciding on a new logo I personally recommend two color logos & design packages. If you look at most major corporations you will see that their logos & identity materials are only two colors. There are several reasons for this:
1) Two color logos are usually crisp, clean looking, & easy to read.
2) Two color logos adapt easier to one color printing (fax cover sheets, forms, one color ads, etc.)
3) Two color logos/design packages are more economical for printing. Most printers are set up for one color, two color, and full color printing. Full color (CYMK) printing is more expensive than one & two color printing. For most printers, to print three colors, they have to run your piece through the press twice ? once, for the first two colors, then a second time for the third color... this makes three color spot printing expensive.

Feel free to e-mail at dclopez@dclgraphics.com if you have any questions.

David is correct to some extent, Angela. You can cut printing costs. You should speak with a representative of a successful printing company about getting the best quality at the lowest price. Also, digital printing services are growing more widespread and that makes printing multi-colors less expensive.

For smaller businesses sometimes the flashier logo is the way to go to get noticed. A lot of it depends on what business your in. I agree that you should make sure whoever does your logo makes it a vector image.

Some companies do full service from logos to business cards. If you go with a company like this make sure your not getting a packaged design.

One of my clients got GREAT CHEAP results from http://www.iconic.cc. A whole package including several logo options, bcard and letterhead layout and I'm not sure what else cost about $650 and they did it in a week!

Hope this helps!

While this is true to some extent you should also think about possible future uses of your logo. Suppose you want to give away promo items like mugs, pens or t-shirts. A 1- or 2-color logo is generally much less expensive than a CMYK graphic.

The BEST route is to have your logo designed in vector format (Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, etc). This file can then be used as a starting point for any other variation that you need. Want to do a full blown 4-color brochure with all the bells and whistles? No prob. Bring your Illustrator file into Photoshop and embellish away. Need a pure black version for faxing? Simple to make with a vector file.
