Why Hire a Pro to write press releases when you can do it yourself?

So there was this thread at SitePoint Forums in which the thread starter had asked if he should be buying a Press release Writing and distribution package from some online service.

There was this one very interesting response to this thread in which the posted said - What's the point of paying someone to do it when writing a Press release isn't that hard.

Another posted had supported this notion saying that no one knows more about your business than you do.

I am not posting the above quotes to insult anyone but to give you a picture of why I made the post to the thread.

Well, My Reply to the above posts was -

Quote:
Why hire an ad agency to make an ad for you when you can make one with your handycam? Why hire a webdesigner to make a site for you when you can use Frontpage?
One of the respondents had further replied to my comment asking if I really thought that a 3-paragraph press release can't be written by someone with relatively good writing technique when there are tutorials online that show the correct format, etc.?

My Response -

Quote:
I agree that DIY PRs may work for some people but then there is a hugeeeee difference between good writing technique and good PR writing technique!

People dont just hire PR agencies just like that... and also writing a Press Release is just one part. There is a whole lot more to public relations.
So, what do you think about this? Would you chose to write your own Press Release by seeing the examples online or rather hire a pro to do it for you?

While I'm certain that I could quickly learn to write decent press releases, I've always been a firm believer that I should not try to take on every role in my company. I could learn how to code too, or design, I could even make my own paper. I could build a new computer part by part, and I could build a desk to put it on from lumber. I can do anything I want. The problem is, when I focus on tasks such as these, I'm not focusing on running my business. Therefore, I choose to hire someone to write press releases.

It depends of course... as petertdavis was saying, if I was running a business I may choose to hire someone so I can keep my focus where it needs to be.

On the other hand, I feel I am strong writer when I need to be and have enough experience crafting letters that I would feel comfortable enough to do so myself.
