Has anyone here ever given a second thought to the concept of trading ad space on your webpage, e-newsletters, etc vs pay for click solutions like Google?

Would this benefit your exposure on the web? Is anyone a member of one of those "link exchange" rings?

Looking for some insight on this as I would, as well as my clients, love to generate more web presence, but only with targeted, controllable, and somewhat reliable ads.

Link excahnges do help by making more links for your page for the search engines to find. I don't know how many clicks come from the links though. Someone with a page similiar to mine is not likely to want a competeing ad on his page. Someone in a different field doesn't mind but the people visiting his page are not there looking for what I have to offer.

I used to refer my friends to click on my ads, and the results is: i was banned by Bidvertiser. Google ads is good at detecting your tricks, and they have rights to ban you anyway. So, reliable persons are really appreciated.
