When you do your planning are you more tactical or strategic in your thoughts?

Re: Tactical vs Strategic

Good point - I look at strategic being 3-5 years out and tactical being more short term like a year.

Re: Tactical vs Strategic

We do a one year budget and then look out over three years we think looking at 5 years is a waste of time

Re: Tactical vs Strategic

I have to admit as a small business we do not spend as much time as we should planning and when we do it is usually a tactical discussion

Re: Tactical vs Strategic

Here's how I look at it. (this is from something I wrote a while ago).

Business planning is about finding, describing, and refining the competitive advantage of your business. When you create a plan and system to monitor your results, it's important to consider the "trees" and the "forest." Most people are either detail-oriented (tree people) or visionaries (forest people). Yet to do business right, business must be looked at from several perspectives. With our Strategic Planning Products, we'll help you create a comprehensive system that covers the three essential types of planning:

Strategic planning helps you create the critical short- and long-term goals that help you move ahead faster.

Tactical planning helps you implement your strategies and make sure that all the pieces of your business are in alignment. I'll be by your side critiquing what you're working on, as well as providing resources and connections to others who can help you.

Operational planning helps you systematize routine operational tasks and long-term projects. You create systems and marketing materials that are so flexible you're bound to think of countless other ways to use them.

Re: Tactical vs Strategic

well i think inorder to be a great business rather than a good business you should try to emprovise both. tactical is moving in an effecient manner, and strategic is actual mythodical thinking to plan for an action.

Re: Tactical vs Strategic

I hate to admit this but we are much more tactically inclined we never seem to sit down and think of the big picture
