starting a manufacturing business making trailers I don't know if I am posting in the correct forum but here goes: I live in NJ, I am trying to find out the proper procedure for starting a manufacturing business. I'm interested in making trailers. I'm not looking for a get rich quick business. More like something that I can do on the weekends and/or at night, maybe make 1 trailer a month. Obviously if the business takes off I can adjust accordingly at that time. I know I could make trailers and register then as homebuilt and then sell them however I would like to know what I would have to do to become a trailer manufacturer. New Jersey does not issue titles for trailers ( at least not small trailers ). As a manufacturer I would supply a certificate of origin and a serial or Vin number. I have no idea where to even start looking for the information I am trying to obtain. Anyone have any ideas?

hmm... To be honest, I'd recommend going to your local SBA and utilizing their network resources. Second, I'd recommend going to your city hall and speaking to their planning department and talking to them about it. Lastly, and it's more detective work than anything, I'd recommend finding a trailor manufacterer and calling them disguised as a college student doing a Business Project. Make a few general questions you have about the permit and other business stuff and hope that they are nice enough to answer your questions. Good luck!

A phone call to the DOT wouldn't hurt either. Another possibility is your trailer parts vendors. They will know the hoops you need to jump through via the g****vine. Ron

Be sure to include product liability insurance in your to do list. I recently bought a new trailer and applied for a title using just the bill of sale and certificate of origin. That's in VA, but should be the same most places. Even new cars and trucks are not titled until the first retail owner does so. Go around some of the trailer sales lots and see what info comes ON the trailer. VIN tag, maybe tire size and pressure info, EW and GW ratings, etc. You can either have tags made, or "burn" the VIN in with a welding rod. Most of the hardware is direct from China. Should not be hard to find axles, etc.
