Starting a business? Don't forget to plan your marketing.

I've always been amazed by clients who call us to consult with them on various public relations and marketing issues three years after they launched their business.

I ask them if they had a business plan. They say "yes, but we wanted to get a feel for our position in the marketplace before spending a bunch of money on marketing." Or...something to that effect. The fact is, they usually are still unsure about how to proceed with marketing efforts.

Well, I strongly suggest that you bring a marketing firm, PR firm or whatever they call them in your circle of entrepreneurs, to help you develop a marketing communication plan.

Good luck and hope the marketplace is ripe for the pickin'.

Mick

Plans are all well and good, but when you are starting up, you need to test the water to see what works. A marketing strategy for one type of business is not always the right direction for another.
An important strategy for any new business to adopt is MERA.
Monitor, Evaluate, Revue, Action
on anything you try...its only then that you can put a comprehensive plan into action that will work for you.

I'm going to steal a quote out of my own book to make a point here.

I just amazes me how many people don't think a business plan is important, of think they can just "wing it". It's like shooting a shotgun into the air hoping you hit something. You never do.

If you don't have a coherent business plan, which includes all aspects of the business including marketing, finance, target market, distribution, and so forth, you just have no way of identifying what you are trying to achieve.

So, to borrow that quote from the book, which I stole (hehehe):

"You have to be careful if you don't know where you're going because you might not get there" --- Yogi Berra

Don't mix the marketing plans / advetisement and PR issues with the business plan

I believe the business plan should set the overall direction of the business and outline the goals and objectives and long term strategies. From that vision comes the operating, financial and marketing plans.
