Do we a need a paper small business magazine ?

Hi,

I recently set up in business offering administrative and proofing services to small businesses. In the process of looking for a paper-based business 2 business small business magazine to advertsie in, I noted that I came to great difficulty finding an approporiate one. There are one or two out there but the majority are web based. I am now considering the possibility of becoming involved in setting one up as my background is in editorial circles.

Is there a need for this?

Please let me have your thoughts on this.

Many thanks

Liz

Just thinking aloud here, but the market may already be filling that need through B2B newspapers. The city-based Business Journal franchise, for instance, plus local and regional newspaper publications.

Really depends on the focus of the business. There are already retail trade magazines available for both general retail and for specific categories. I know when I worked in the movie industry, there were also various trade magazines for that. Plus there are professional magazines and trade journals already available.

But for specific magazines you might want to look at these links:

Hmm I for one as a small business owner, dont tend to buy business magazines( this could just be me though), on occasion i will get BRW(Business Review Weekly) or maybe a shares magazine but that is it.

I can get more out of spending 10-15 minutes a day here then i could from a magazine i beleive.

The other thing as you mention about advertising, if i am looking for a business to do somthing i tend to look online rather then through magazines, when i do buy magazines i flick through and read the articles i want to then it get put aside. I rarely if ever take note of any ads in them.

But of course this could just be me being in a Hi0Tech industry, i beleive there are still many Small Business that are struggle to get a handle on Technology and many probably dont make as much use of it as they could be.

The thing you should look at is why there aren't a lot of small business magazines. This could be due to the fact that others have done the research and found it's not a good investment. I'm always skeptical when I find a niche with little to no competition so that makes me work even harder to get all of the facts and work through a business plan before I move forward.

Just saying do your homework

this is a test...

Why don't you create a PDF version and see how that goes?

I"m hearing more and more people printing things and reading it offline.

I'm all for a small business magazine. I already subscribe to about thirty business related and trade magazines, but could find room for another. I'd at least give it a read and subscribe if I liked the content. Keep us updated whether you pursue this.

Re: Print magazine

Hi Liz,

Cost is probably the biggest reason why no one else has done this already. We're talking thousands of dollars to print 1000 copies. And it would take a lot of work to put together.

I live in a small Mayberry-like community north of Atlanta and two free, thin, glossy, monthly magazines have popped up -- one for the town and one for the county. One is automatically mailed to every home and they're both available in doorways at restaurants, grocery stores, etc.

Both contain interesting articles related to the community and are packed with ads for local businesses.

If you were to do something like this, it would probably be a full-time job gathering content, securing advertising, designing the layout, getting them printed and distributed,..... every month.

Are you against offering your own e-newsletter?

As Diane points out, printing is expensive and time consuming. Web based dissemination of information is easy, boundary-less, cheap, and offers rich capabilities. Inc, and Fast Company were some magazines i remember.
