Cash from Banner Adds?

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine runs a Free Information website here in Thailand. It gets a lot of hits from a specific group. He updates it very regularly thus keeping its content fresh.

He informed me he collects around 75,000 Thai Baht monthly (about 1,000 sterling) from allowing companies to place a small banner add on his home page.

He's not a businessman and doesn't try to deliberately make money for his efforts. He loves his website and the cash it generates is a much welcome bonus.

Does this sound realistic to members of this Forum or is he inflating these figures? Remember, this is his hobby, it's not a business, and he doesn't seek advertisers or sponsorship.

Thanks in advance

Aitch

I had to convert the 75,000 to USD which comes to about US$1800+/-.

That figure is realistic i suppose but would need to take into consideration exactly how many unique visitors the site receives, what type of information is provided(which in turn determines the target market the advertisers have), and if this is for an ad from a single business or many.

Based on the figure you gave he would ahve to be getting a lot of visitors, like probably over 500,000 i would assume at a CPM of about USD$3.60, but this could be a lot more if the visitors are highly targeted to the businesses advertising.

Basically it is possible but he woudl need a fairly high number of visitors for it to be possible.

Thanks for the replies. I won't give his website out as he may not appreciate me talking about his business online. The website is about specific employment. It covers everything from employees to employers, the good bad and the ugly of both sides, free job advertising and a place to submit and read CVs etc. There are many small banner adds on his site. Still seems like quite an income from someone who doesn't look for one.

Cheers

Aitch

I think it is realistic of high volume sites. I get about $150 a month from google for my forum sites, but they are very new and I am happy to break even on my hosting costs. Anything else after break even is a bonus, since I am not doing these forum sites to make money.

The income sounds totally realistic. Whilst CPC (charging per thousand clicks an advert receives, I operate a successful site where I charge a fixed amount for my banners monthly, I am fortunatel in that the site is respected and focused allowing me to charge a premium for my advertising. CPC is not the only way to go, but even if you choose that way as long as you have the volume of traffic ?1000 is realistic. Google adwords could be one way of achieving this income easily without the hassle of finding advertisers.
