Getting large companies as advertising clients

Hey there guys. I'm sure most of you know who I am already. I'm Dani, from www.daniweb.com computer and programming support community.

In any case, I have a question to throw at you fellas. It seems that while I do get ad campaigns with many of the smaller sites (many of them forums), I have never had a campaign from a big company or corporation.

I have seen that many other forums which are much smaller than DaniWeb have had such luck. Does anyone have any idea why this may be?

I have a media kit which is available by clicking on Advertising in the footer of every page within the site.

Am I dong something wrong? It's not that I can't get advertisers ... it's just that I can't get any big budget advertisers really

I appreciate your guidance!

- Dani

Dani, Getting directly to the point of Why is it that your competitors 'Smaller in size' than your site are getting more 'bigger budget' advertisers than you -

It is either a case of :

a. Your competitors being at the Right Place at the Right time.

b. Your competitors making better pitch than you.

c. or, Both.

From your post I will take it that you are NOT competing Head On with you for the Advertiser. And, that brings me to the question - How are you promoting your site to advertisers? . Yes, promoting that your site is available for them to place an ad on!

In your post you have just said that you place a link to your Media Kit on the bottom of evey page. How many of your members run a business that you can target as your advertisers?

Second question - Are you dealing direct one-to-one with advertisers? Have you ever considered involving Ad Sales companies for this purpose? Most of the times these big corporations do not mess their hands in dealing with one or two publishers [ Unless you are someone of the size of NewsCorp ]

How am I promoting my site to advertisers? Well, there is a link to the media kit on the bottom of every page. Nearly all pages also have a 728x90 banner on them which advertise our mediakit. I also have an AdWords ad group which goes directly to my mediakit. In addition, when I browse a nice looking site, and I see advertisements on it, I contact the webmaster to inquire about purchasing advertising without there having to be an explicit message "we sell advertising" - it seems sorta obvious

Second question ... After further investigation, I realized that the way that these smaller sites get the big advertisers is because they use Advertising Networks such as FastClick, Burst!Media, and ValueClick. I don't use those, I sell directly. Which seems to therefore answer my question for me
