Chip off the ol' Proc

What's the benefit to adding a subdomain?

I understand the benefit of adding portal pages tuned to different
engines. However another SEO recommended to my client that they create
a separate subdomain, with just a few words in the description changed.
They described it as going from widgets.com to automobile.widgets.com.

This just sounds mixed up to me. Subdomains don't have descriptions,
pages do. Or am I missing something? Is repeating content in a
subdomain a beneficial tactic?

Thanks,
Chip
