US - The House of Spam

According to a Sophos study reported by ZDNet -- U.S. again is the homeland of spam. 42 percent of all spam collected in Sophos's network of "honeypots" originated in the U.S. South Korea and China came in a distant second and third, together sending only half as much spam as the U.S.

Sophos warned that many spammers are using hacked PCs with broadband connections to send out their spam. This could explain South Korea's position near the top of the list, as it leads the world for broadband penetration.

This only stands to reason as the US still has the largest number of Internet Users of any country in the world with China being a close second. To counteract this though, large ISP's like AOL are reporting reduced incoming spam across the board.

AOL reports the decrease is all spam but they have also been losing subscribers to broadband providers as well.

I don't get much spam so can't track it personally. I took my email address off the Internet two years ago, changed some email addresses that I use, started sending catchalls to the abyss and abandoned an email which was giving me the most spam. Now I might get 400 spam emails a month where my legitimate email traffic is up to 20,000 a month because of the Yahoo! Groups I am on.
