Lightbulb Site5's Viral Promotion Stunt!!!

I accidently stumbled upon this information when I started to investigate an email I recieved from Site5.com, a webhosting solutions company, which looked like spam to me.

Site5 was promoting a Pseudo Company, which was due to start in November 2004, in their staff's signatures at WebHostingTalk.com [A webhosting discussions community]. They were running a promotion to give away free accounts when they start, to all those who give them their email address[which I don't remember giving them :writing: ]

"We wanted to try something clever. So much of today's online advertising is stale and trite. The BlastIndex project was an effort to explore unique new marketing tactics," said Lightner. "The project has been a huge success, and will pave the way for more innovative and effective campaigns in the future."

It is certainly an excellent stunt which has proved that how powerful communities can be but was one lil flaw in its execution.

The email which was sent to me did not state anywhere if it was a one time mailing only or I would be recieving more mail from them and if I could somehow opt-out from it.

With so much information being forced on people daily, how do you expect them to quickly recall a brand which they had only one contact with?!?! This lead me to suspect that they were spamming me and hence tarnished their image in my eyes << Point to be noted

Re: Site5's Viral Promotion Stunt!!!

I really don't think there is too much information being forced on people today. After all what would the internet today be like if we started to reduce its content. China! After all it's the free flow of information over the internet that allows all who enter an opportunity to explore virtually anything. However, there are pitfalls and problems. And unwanted communications (spamming).
