But at least he knows more than average. A fair amount of my customers
don't know about Google, and they think the only way to access a web site
is typing its url in the Yahoo search box.

he's almost right there... we use an invisible div to hide text that is
placed at the top of the screen

How great is the risc of being banned? Several months ago I informed Google
about such a site but it's still a number 1 hit in Google.

View source will reveal the hidden text to a competitor who has the
option to submit a spam report to the search engines.

The search engines might view your site and give it a manual penalty
for hidden text.

So the above is no better than white text on white background, it just
looks better (if done right) when viewed in a browser. When done badly
the window scrolls for a long time :-)

Neither technique is advisable if you want long term success.

There is someone one at the Google Support Group that just had their site
banned by that technique.

It may well, despite the use of spam, be a more useful site than those
under it who don't.

Re: lol will clients never learn

no Mmark, you can not use hidden white text on a white background.
While my company does not endorse the use of keyword stuffing in css,
if you feel you must load the page with hidden keywords to get high
rankings then use a css sheet but do use misleading or non-related
keywords.....

remember in this business you can lead a horse to water...but you can't
make them drink...
