Question Not able to log onto this website.

This last weekend I was at my daughters home and wanted to visit the small-business-forum.com. The computer kept giving me a unknown page error as it could not find this website. The computer was connected to the www by DSL (not sure but I think the ISP was Altel ) with yahoo as the default web page. I could bring up any other website forum such as "IncTalk.com" but not this website. IE 6.0, Tools, internet options, changes made no difference as I tried low security with the same error that website not found. I tried to find the website through google.com but again the website was listed but the click of the link resulted in an error reporting the website could not be found. I tried search from AOL website but got the same error of no website found. Is this website really here or am I dreaming that I am typing this question? Anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong with my daughters computer settings?

Sounds like a DNS error. Could be that it was an isolated incident. If the site continues to be unavailable from your daughter's computer, I'd suspect something with her settings (though I couldn't imagine what). If it's working from there now, I'd bet it was the DNS.

Peter... It has not been working with that computer for some time and damn if I can figure out why. I know the computer, WinXP home, has IE problems as only the "admn" can log onto the internet. Guest and kids "e" (IE 6.0) will not log onto the internet. I have run Norton WinDoctor & Anti-Virus, Spybot, and other tests with no luck. I really don't understand DNS, maybe you can explain what DNS is and how to check it?

DNS = Domain Name Servers. It's sort of like a traffic cop, telling your ISP how to route your browser to find the server where the website you're seeking is hosted. If it's been a persistant problem only on that one computer, I'd suspect the computer itself then. If you have another computer there, or could bring one, you can isolate the problem if another computer plugged in the same connection has access to the forum, you know it's the computer.

If it is running Norton Anti-Virus, that might be the problem. A lot of forums use cookies and NAV will not allow them. Depends on the settings, but I know I was running a forum that would not come up with NAV at the default setting. They had to back it down a notch, or two, in order to get in.

BTW, NAV comes with a number of sites excluded as defaults, some of which seem to be only by the programmers' whims. Not ****, etc., maybe competitors? Anyhow, it's corporate censorship.

No... Norton Anti-Virus was run from my CD as the computer only has AG? anti-virus (that free program) and I did not want to install my Norton Systemworks on someone elses computer. It is a real mystery that I guess might only be solved by reinstalling windows and Internet Explorer. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have had the same problem for weeks. This is the first time I have been able to get on this forum in days. I can get on one day and then later in the day or the next day I cannot. I have had this problem ever since the forum was updated.
