how to optimise your google ranking?

After looking around a bit, and reading some of the threads in these forums, I know a little bit about google rankings, but not as much as I would like to know. Theres one area which im not sure about. Google gives your site a higher rating if you have lots of links to your webpage. Does it matter what pages these links come from? In an attempt to get a higher google rating, i have linked lots of dashes is my sig. Will that make a difference?

Yay! done more reading about google. small business forums has a google ranking of 6. So im guessing that means everytime we put our links on this site, or page ranking creeps up a little bit.

Posting on forums with your link in your signature has a very small effect on PageRank. It's much better for you to focus on getting more powerful links, such as a listing in the DMOZ, or Yahoo directory. But, pretty much all links to your site are good, you should seek to acquire as many as you can. The more popular the site, and the more related in theme to your site, the better.

i took your advice and started looking into the directories, But i discovered they charge 299$ just for a review, which doesnt even guaruntee that your site will make it. The best option for me is probably to swap links with other web designers? how many links do you think ill need? to get a decent listing

Google Page Rank

Some notes on page rank copied from my web site.

The precise algorithm for Google Page Rank is not published but it is known to be affected by:
  1. Original content
  2. Fresh, regularly updated content
  3. Themed sites i.e If your site is about marketing, pages devoted to crotchet will not help (and probably damage) your overall page rank
  4. Pages written for human readers and not designed to 'fool' the search engines
  5. Size of site - number of pages
  6. Number and quality of incoming links
    • From similarly themed sites
    • From sites with high page rank
    • From sites with high traffic
    • Important Sites with irrelevant links may be punished. Concentrate on quality of link, not quantity
  7. Number of outgoing links
  8. Internal links within your site
While the details of google page rank may not be completely known, it is very clear that the single most important thing in increasing the google page rank of your pages and site is down to the number and quality of the incoming links.

In highly competitive areas the page rank leaders have 100s of incoming links. If you operate in a less competitive niche you may be able to achieve a decent page rank with a few, good quality, incoming links.

Hope this helps.

yeah, it matters where the hits are coming from... for those who can set up an ebay store for your business and find a creative way to link back to your network(see what i mean by klicking my profile links)... hits from ebay are nice. any high traffic site that i find who allows links i always link.
