Graphics programs

We are in the market for a graphic design program and there are several to choose from. We would like to get your thoughts on which one to buy and why. We are not professional designers (obviously or we would not be asking the question) and we plan on using it to develop fairly simple graphics.

Re: Graphics programs

Photoshop is a great start and you will never outgrow it. Illustrator is also another great program which i love using. It also depends on what you are designing for eg web, print etc. The BASIC general rule is Illustrator for vector projects and PS for raster projects.
Steer clear of cheaper imitations like paintshop pro etc.

Re: Graphics programs

Rich in features means complicated and usually difficult to learn which we heard that photoshop is. We use a program called Ulead which is as ro**** a program that we need (we are not graphic designers)

Re: Graphics programs

We now use Macromedia's Fireworks which we find is pretty ro****. In the past we used Ulead and did not find the help section that helpful and it was difficult getting to know the program.

Re: Graphics programs

We use Ulead and have found it to be a nice balance between the more complex programs like photoshop and simplier graphic programs that just do not have the features that you want.
