Why would a high PR backlink to a low PR?

When you are just starting out you are not going to have a high PR and you know it is to your benefit to get backlinks to a website with a high PR. But it is to the benefit of the high PR site not to link to you because I am told Google does not look favorably on a bunch of links to low PR sites. So my question is this: How do you get a high PR site to link to you to help you grow your traffic?

This is the 6 million dollar question unfortunately their is not a clear cut answer and it depends on a number of factors. However, some of the things that would encourage a higher PR to rank to you are:
  • If you are advertising a lot
  • If the content complements their content
  • If you have other sites that could link to theirs
  • If you advertise on their site
  • If you profile their business

I agree you have to look at it from WIIFM What in it for them. You have to provide them with a carrot or some incentive to link to you otherwise if they are smart they will know that it can actually hurt if they link to a lower ranking site.

Re: Why would a high PR backlink to a low PR?

We have not had much success at all encouraging high PR sites to link to some of our clients sites because if they are high PR then the client is smart enough to know the damage it could cause by linking to a bunch of low ranking sites.

Re: Why would a high PR backlink to a low PR?

We have found that it is not worth the effort to try to get higher ranking pages to backlink to you if the PR is a lot higher than yours. We find it is a better use of our time writing articles and other simliar things to get links back to us.

The good content is the key.
There is no other reason to link to you except the money for advertising of course.
