MSN set to dominate search engines by next year?

MSN has released their search engine to the world now (if not completely). Microsoft has a lot of ca$h to backup their enterprises.

Does anybody here think that MSN will be a real challenge to Google's search engine dominanace in the coming year?

It's hard to tell the future (otherwise I'd be heavily invested in the market). I definately think MSN has a lot of weight to throw around and they'll make a dent in Google's share, but as to how big that dent will be is still up in the air, in my opinion.

I think Google's desktop search will play a relatively big role in it. If Google decide to develop a browser (although they have stated they don't plan to), I think that'll play an even bigger role.

MSN will have an impact but I doubt they will win complete market share.

I think, or would like to think, that the days of people falling aimlessly over all things MS are over. People can see there are alternatives out there. Look at the way Firefox is being taken up as an IE replacemtn. SUre I'll admit that the "average" user who simply buys the PC will probably never leave IE, it's there read to go.

I think though that everyone knows Google. People rarely say "I'll serch for that on the search engine" they say "I'll look for that on google".

Google works - mostly, I think Microsoft will have a battle. Google's "bad" product? Their desktop search thing. I doubt many will go for it then they learn the data of your hard drive is sent off to google.

Google will most likely move into web hosting next. In my opinion of course.

By the way hi I'm new

I think MS could very well get up to approx 50% market share.

Straight from the horses mouth. They don't keep the info on their own servers.

Maybe so but MSN still gets 10 times as much traffic as Google does every month.

Everyone looks at this as if Microsoft has to gain marketshare. They don't. As I have been saying, they have the second largest ISP in the United States, they already have agreements with some of the largest telecommunications companies to bring more customers. They sell over a million television access devices a year which only work with their Provider's Network. They have the infrastructure to sell advertising for the search engine in place already. This includes a worldwide network of salespeople and their small business website.

Even if only half of their MSN visitors use their search engine, they already have a significant portion of the traffic they need to be in the top three. The last thing that Microsoft needs to worry about is initial traffic. They have been building that for four years already. They have the marketshare, all they have to do is use their own technology instead of leasing it like they are currently doing.

This doesn't mean they will dominate. I think the top tier of websearching has room for three players, each doing equally well. Those players will be Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. AOL doesn't seem to have any interest in this venue and the rest are using repackaged results or will be bought to strengthen the three top brands.

I really don't think they will be able to surpass Google. Google is now a firmly established family name, the default website on many shipped computers, very simple and easy to use plus gives you the best results.

Microsoft would have to spend a heck of a lot of money to even get close to Google, imo. I know I will still stick with Google.

Maybe if MS can get their search to be the default homepage on new computers from Dell and other major brands, but i'm not sure they could.

But, MSN is established, and does get a lot of visitors.

/me waits for the Battle Royal

MSN's biggest boost is that the default homepage in every IE installation I've ever seen is msn.com, a site that is very well-known and on page load focuses on the search box. At some point a lot of users are going to take advantage of that perceived convenience.
