| Getting Google to Index Images Hello, Back in early March I published a new web site - www.marsartgallery.com. It seemed that within days Google had indexed my site. Tonight I happened to be using Google's image search to search for images using the term "Olympus Mons." I was surprised to see that the image I have of Olympus Mons did not appear. Searches for other images, limited to my domain, all came back with nada, zippo, nothing. Now, I use the search term in the body near the image, I use the term in the alt text for the image, and I use the term in a link to the page containing the image. When I do a standard google using the term, the page holding the image turns up in the search results. Either 1) I am totally missing something which is why Google has not indexed any of the images on my site, or 2) Google is absymally slow at adding new images to its database. But why would pages take only a few days and images take more than 2 months? I would greatly appreciate any pointers that anyone here could provide me with. Please note that my email address is a fake to foil spammers so please reply to the group. Thanks in advance. Check your access_log(s), did Googlebot fetch your images? > 2) Google is absymally slow at adding new images to its database. That's normal, expect to wait several months more. -- John Perl SEO tools: http://johnbokma.com/perl/ Experienced (web) developer: http://castleamber.com/ Get a SEO report of your site for just 100 USD: http://johnbokma.com/websitedesign/seo-expert-help.html |

I had no idea that it took them that long to index images. Do they prioritize the process because I know that I have successfully searched on images found on other sites where the image hadn't been out there that long. Thanks for the info. I have no idea, I sometimes have the impression that it's done in batches. If I have time I will check my access_logs if I can confirm this (on my site that is). -- John Perl SEO tools: http://johnbokma.com/perl/ Experienced (web) developer: http://castleamber.com/ Get a SEO report of your site for just 100 USD: http://johnbokma.com/websitedesign/seo-expert-help.html |

You are probably seeing some of the "sandbox" effect where new sites don't get good ranking for several months. My site went online at the end of January and I'm not seeing any hits from Google for generic searches. Once you come out of the sandbox you can expect to see new content appear in searches pretty soon after Google spiders it. A query with "site:yoursite.com" will show you if you content is in the index at all. Still, being in the index doesn't mean you will show up for any generic keyword searches. Several pages of my site come up with the "site:" query and for very specific, quoted terms but don't show up at all for unquoted searches on the same text. I imagine the image query works much the same way. --Beach Comber (http://worldbeachlist.com/) |

As I said in my original post, the page containing the referenced image does show up on a Google text search but not on a Google image search. Looks like I need to read up on the "sandbox". > >A query with "site:yoursite.com" will show you if you content is in the >index at all. Yup, it are two different bots, check your access_log > Looks like I need to read up on the "sandbox". Some people think that a new domain first gets a boost in SERPS, and then drops down for say 3 months. Not all domains suffer from this effect, and it seems related with how hard it's promoted, if too hard, it seems the sandbox effect takes place. So with a new domain, it might you see yourself at #5, then #3, then for 3 months you drop to #315, and then you are "back", say on #19 for a given query. > I do show up on page searches but not on image searches. image indexing goes much slower, it takes months before it happens (my experience). http://images.google.com/images?safe=off&q=esme 2nd picture, bottom row: took almost 4 months. -- John Perl SEO tools: http://johnbokma.com/perl/ Experienced (web) developer: http://castleamber.com/ Get a SEO report of your site for just 100 USD: http://johnbokma.com/websitedesign/seo-expert-help.html |

I'm wondering, by the same token, if image links may take longer than text links to be indexed and counted. BB -- www.kruse.co.uk/ seo@kruse.demon.co.uk seo that watches the river flow... -- |
