Hi Mosqwik, welcome to the forum. The best way you can start is to look at businesses for sale. You can get an idea of their business model and see if it would appeal to you. You will also get an idea of what type of money the business can generate. Then you can decide if you want to build it from scratch or buy an existing business. Good luck.

I would also suggest you look at the Dept of Labor site, they can give you an idea of the growth rates for the various industries and then you can look at the financial statistics on the IRS site to determine the profitability.

The best advice I can give you is to follow your passion - someone said if you love what you do for work everyday you will never have to work again. Not only should you like it you should also be good at it.

Congratulations on deciding to start your own business! You've got a long road ahead of you indeed, however, you're on the right track by looking for help on these types of forums.
