Is it worth getting a trademark/servicemark?

We are a small business and have not applied for a service mark on our logo is it worth it for small businesses? It seems like an expense that makes more sense once you get to a mid size level - What are your thoughts?

Re: Is it worth getting a trademark/servicemark?

We have not applied for one either we felt if someone wanted to steal our brand that would be fine provided they promoted it because we really do not have a brand. I think most small business owners overestimate the value of their brand. Obviously if you have a distinctive tag line and look and feel with a cool name you may want to consider trademarking it but otherwise I wait until you are alittle bigger.

It is not too expensive and I think it is worth it if you have a decent name and when you go on the web and do not find anyone who is using the name the same way that you are.

There are services and companies that can do it fairly inexpensively if you have been around for more than a few years and you have a viable business model then I would definately spend the money to get a service or trade mark it will improve the value of your business.
