Question about online taxes

Hello,

I am not sure how the whole tax aspect of sales affects the internet. Because of how easy it is to sell internationally and all the many other ways online says differs from offline sales.

My question is if we are a Quebec based company (in Canada) and we have both a Provincial and a Federal sales tax, what do we have to charge our customers. I assume that if the purchase is being made within Quebec then we need to charge both. If the sales it outside Quebec, but within Canada, do we charge only Federal? If their province has a Provincial sales tax as well do we need to charge them for it? International sales to the US or overseas do not need to be charge tax I believe, but please correct me if I am wrong.

I would definitely appreciate any insight you may have,
Thanks in advance.

Re: Question about online taxes

Nadav, I am not sure how it works in Canada so I am not sure I can be of much help but in the US if it is a digital (downloadable) product you do not have to pay a sales tax. If it is a physical product then you have to pay a sales tax in the state where you reside.

Re: Question about online taxes

Ace, thank you for your imput.
We have a federal and a provincial sales tax. The prouct is a physical product so I assume that within our province we need to charge both taxes. Outside of my province, do you think I need to charge the federal tax? If their province has a provincial tax also, no need to charge it correct?
I will speak with an accountant before I start processing sales, but I just want to know what to expect.

Re: Question about online taxes

In the US you do not have to charge a federal tax, just the state if it is a physical product
