National Do-Not-Call List comming to Canada?

Hello,

I have heard a lot, and read a lot about the idea of Canada implementing a National Do Not Call List similar to the one in the US and other countries. When this is implemented "violators will face a hefty fine at $15,000 per infraction for companies and $1,500 for individuals."

Here are some sources:
Canadian Do Not Call List - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wikipedia gives information on the topic dating back as far as 2004.

Does anyone any thoughts about this?
How will this affect telemarketing within Canada?
How will it affect other countries telemarketing to Canada?
What can be done to save telemarketing, or to improve it?

It will take some time before the information gets out in public so you have a window of time to take advantage of. If they make the penalties strong as they have in other countries it would really impact your business. However, most people screen their calls or at least start having it go to the answering machine so I think there are some limitations of this marketing anyways. What I would be looking for is whether or not the do not call program covers cell phones if not there is a huge opportunity there.

Bizwiz, you made some good comments. It will take time before the information gets out to the public, however it will be viral and people will speak about it. Although you are right that there are limitations already in this form of marketing, there are limitations in all forms. If there was any one single perfect marketing method, we'd all be multi-millionaires. The idea about cell phones could be a great idea, I've thought about it and am just waiting for the list to begin so all the rules & regulations will have been published and I don't buy a list and then a rule changes on me.

My sense is that although there are fines, they will not be applied unless there is an eggregious violation of the law i.e. you started calling everyone on the do not call list but if you make a mistake and dial the occasional number on the do not call list I cant see them penalizing you. There are plenty of people who will not go on the list so you will continue to have a big market.
