Funding a Business

Wanted to get some opinions, we are looking at a business but do not have the cash to buy it and we do not want to bring in partners. We are wondering what would be a better choice borrowing from our credit cards or taking a home equity loan and then paying it down with the business revenue.

With a home equity loan you may be able to get a deduction for the interest and the interest will be lower than a credit card. The biggest concern is if you do not pay your home equity loan you could lose your house. To me neither is a good option, I would try to find another alternative like sub prime lenders or your local bank, friends, or family

I agree with CCC but it often there is not an option or other options available you have to decide on the risk and time. If it is a short term cash flow problem you may want to consider a credit card if it is a longer term you may want to consider a home equity loan.

A home equity loan is fine if you can get a decent rate.
But be sure you can handle the payment even if you lose the business.
If you are single or don't have kids to worry about, you are in a better position to risk your home. If you are young enough to start over (should it come to that) and confident your business venture is sound, then there is no reason you can't use your home quity.

Re: Funding a Business

Before you use your home equity or credit cards which in my opinion are poor choices as outlined above in the various posts. You should try going to a credit union because of some recent legistlation virtually everyone can qualify for an account at a credit union. There is a site that tells you where to go based on a series of questions I found it on clarkhoward.com: Save more, spend less and avoid ripoffs. Credit Unions tend to be smaller and some believe are friedlier to small businesses.
