I find Norton terribly intrusive. You have to have a password to un-install it. We made the mistake of ordering a ten pack corp version and had to hire a consultant to figure out how to renew it.
So far, I have gotten by with a well crafted hardware firewall in my router. To that end you might visit Steve Gibsons site at
www.grc.com. He has some very clever free tools as well as great explanations for some of the security issues. "Shoot the Messinger" and "Shields up" are both useful.
