Advertisers Don't Want Foreign Business : Good Strategy?

I read this on AdRants...

Quote:
Here's a unique approach to handling advertising inquiries. Some advertisers simply doen't want to talk to you unless you live in their home country. Upon clicking a text ad on The Superficial for some advertisers, a Canadian user reports he was delivered to this page which said: "We Apologize! The advertiser you clicked on has requested not to receive any visits from users outside of their market area." A bit rude for a marketer one thinks.
With GeoTargetting in Place, you really don't need to embarrass the visitors... and even if they actually come on to the page, i.e. you have already paid for the click, then you can show them the actual landing page. Even if they don't convert directly they may spread the word about you!

What do you think about it?

While this was handled poorly, I think too many companies are making a mad dash into international sales without thinking about the costs involved. Personally, I don't sell outside the United States and really don't plan to though I do use the Internet. It is hard enough to deal with the labyrinth of laws between the 50 states and the Federal government. It would be impossible as a small business to deal with those of 200 other countries. As such, it would be a waste of money to advertise to people that are outside the sphere of influence.

Geotargetting should take place before the ad is shown. The advertising network gets the IP address when the ad is requested so don't show an ad that isn't relevant. The advertiser should require this or go with another network.

I wonder if the advertiser actually knows how the advertising network is handling international 'request'?! Maybe that is their (advertising network) cheap form of geotargeting? I agree - the ad should not even be served if an international IP is discovered.

I have done some PPCs and they ask what countries you want.

And I picked all that I knew spoke English.

Perhaps I should have been more liberal in me

Dunno, Lotto, I guess it really depends on what you're selling. Limitiing your PPC campaign to national, or even local, may make very good sense to some businesses.
