Regional Business Name in a National Market.

Hello,

Looking for some feedback on this.

For the newest launch we're working with, we are looking at having a region in our Business Name - Northwest Air........

Of course our target market is local and regional but we are looking to expand more to the National market by the second year of business.

I really don't think a regional name would hurt us and might even help us given that it may send the message...this is where we started, we're proud to be in the Northwest, this is our home, we have pleased many customers here and are looking to expand - sort of deal...?

Any feedback on this...?

Thanks All!

Re: Regional name

IMHO -- it will serve you well for attracting business in your area but may hurt you down the road when you go national.

Will people think you don't serve them? Kind of like your Northwest Air example. I live in Atlanta and tend to stay on the east coast, so I've never had a reason to contact airlines like that one. But what if I did? Would I call them? Probably not because subconsciously, they don't serve me.

It's good that you're thinking ahead, so choose the right name for your company that will take it into the future and then build your brand.

But SOUTHWEST is much catchier than Northwest.

Kidding aside, visualize it in your mind. National ad campaign with your proposed name? You will know if it is right.

LOL>Southwest

Yeah, thanks for the responses.

After going back over the biz plan and everything else, we're definitely going to shoot for a more a non-region name.

Thanks again

Perception is important; as in how with your ideal clients perceive you. I would not use NW anything for a national market.

First it's the NW vs. national thing. 2nd it's a perception of what some people feel about the NW... for some it's great, for others it's not.

Unless you would like to stay a mostly NW company, I'd do what you're doing; go for a more generic, but clear name.

Exactly...

And good point on the perception - something I hadn't thought too much about before.

Thanks!

I don't know, it may not hurt. You could always add international or something when you expand.
