First I would consider the place of the ad. The ad size in relation to the spot where it appears is pretty standard, but a below-the-fold banner wouldn't do too good I would think. Also, the standard banner in the top header probably is not as good as some people think, because users tend to block out those banners - they are not in the flow of content. These days I would say cubes would produce the best results.
