Banners, popups, sales letters, adsense?

With all the various routes to marketing which are the best vehicles and most cost effective to use in your opinion?

Well, that is a very specific topic. I would try to post on forums and blogs about birds and put a link to your site in the signature of every forum you are a member of. Do you have a budget that you have to use? Can you give the range?

We will probably spend $500-$1000 on advertising

Would you consider pay per click marketing (PPC)? Nothing is better than organic (free) traffic but you have a budget to test the PPC engines (Google adwords and Yahoo). Both are running promos for new sign ups (check my sig). PPC is a good marketing tool because with such a specific topic you will get quality traffic. You could also SEO (search engine optimization) your site to rank high in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

You may want to consider advertising or putting a brochure in pet stores or advertise online through pet store or even more specific bird feeding stores

I think that if you advertise the pop up work better than a static advertisement - unfortuantely
