Yes i had a look through Version 1.3 which is available to default install from my host, i am not sure if it is a good idea to use an old version or not as support from other users would drop off, as i wouldnt pay the license fee for there new version on the principle, that they stated it would remain free then wipe that idea out with a charge.

Or am i completly off base are the features if Invision Board worth spending the money on?

Hmmm After just having a look now at the Invision Board site. I can say one thing, i will not be purchasing it. There Lifetime license fee is even higher then vBulletin, though there yearly one seems to be less i think. There is little chance i will go with Invision unless 1.3 has the mods i need to do some of the things.

I paid for my first forum software, UBB, it was fine until my board starting getting really big. After that I upgraded to phpBB, which I've been very happy with, it works great and doesn't cost a dime. Like you said, tons of mods available too. Good luck with it...

I'm very happy with phpBB and they will likely be upgrading shortly to include many new features. I agree that vBulletin offers more (for a price), but I think phpBB is a great free product. I would not recommend any others except maybe Invision.

Yeah well Invision looks good but to purchase a life time license is now more then vBulletin, which is not good because vBulletin is still better then invision i beleive.

I am waiting to see the new phpBB actually in hopes that it may be better but we will see i guess. Any ideas at how long till we can expect to see it.

It's too happy someone mention coldfusion. In my opinion, fusetalk is good, but too expensive. I prefer cf-forum by cfcode.com. It should suit your need.

I used phpBB as a starter. Once reaching a solid volume of traffic I upgraded to vBulletin. After seeing how smooth the upgrade went I will do the same thing with my other projects that include a forum. I do have a hacked version of phpBB that at least gives me a little more features than the standard version of phpBB.

Don't wait for phpBB 2.2 - the developers are extremely slow moving forward. And in regards to security - too many security wholes. The steady patches are a pain when working with a hacked version (which again is caused due to the lack of features).

I think phpBB is great. I have a forum with over 100,000 posts, and it's running strong. I've been able to customize it to fit my needs, and there is a great community to get support.
