Domain stealing

I was on the train and saw an article title in the newspaper of a fellow traveler about domain stealing - does anyone know how they do it? Does it happen often?

Re: Domain stealing

Often they break into the registrars database and there is very little you can do. However, sometimes scammers also send you an email that your domain is up for registration then get you to switch over to them and then they reregister it in their name.

Re: Domain stealing

I cant believe the registrars let that happen, I am sure you can get your domain back if you are defrauded but it may take awhile

My understanding is that it does not happen that often and the ISPs are working hard to prevent it.

Re: Domain stealing

We have not had our domain stolen but we have had our site stolen in other words it all of the sudden did not show up and the registrar could not explain it.
