SEO Domain name question

Hello folks,

I was wondering if the domain extension matters for SEO. For example will mydomainname.nl rank higher then mydomainname.com in google.nl (meaning, localised search)? Or doesn't it matter.

Thanks a bunch for the reply (if one..)

Re: SEO Domain name question

I think like all SEO questions nobody really knows the answer unless you work at google. I will say that .com names have been around longer, and have been registered longer which I am told google looks at how long the domain has been registered. But I have seen highly ranked sites that are not .com

I agree all the .coms are already taken and have a history any other extension is looked on less favorably but there have been some .net stories like Payment Gateway to Accept Online Payments

Re: SEO Domain name question

I think providing you do a great job at SEO on the site it doesnt matter what the domain is.

Cool Re: SEO Domain name question

There is some value. For instance, I know for a fact that .org's get special attention from search engines like Google, just as long as the content is appropriate to educational sites.

I've seen some websites making good, though somewhat underhanded, advantage of this. But, hey? That's the business sometimes.

Anyway, if the .org has anything to say about it, then, 'Yes', there is an SEO value here. But I will add that whatever value exists between extensions like .com and .net are probably nothing a single backlink would not equal out.

Ultimately, the real value is in familiarity. I always try for .com's first, because .com's is where the Internet began. And when anyone says that they have a website, most people will assume a .com extension before any other. Whatever SEO advantage exists, it can't be worth more than that.
