Actually, there is something that could affect the ranking of the site.

If the hosting is low quality, the time for which your web site loads could be so long, so the searche engines robots may not read the whole text on your web pages, or might not be able to read all pages.

If the hosting is free:
* the web site might be ignored by some of the search engines
or
* the hosting provider might block the traffic from some countries - as a result some of the spiders might not be able to find your site

Wow I did not know that I thought they did not really care whether or not your hosting is free. I was familiar with the other points.
