Question Internship Laws and Guildlines for Interns and Employers

What are the laws for interships? If I have a student from a local high school who wants to come to my office to be a tagalong to learn about business operations, what do I do? Do I have to file papers with the Labor Department or do I just need to him to sign a contract that says he understands he is working for learning purposes only and may be paid little if any but not on a salary basis? How should I go about do this?

I would also like to intern in a printing house in my area. I know the owner and we are on very good terms and we have talked about me being her intern for a little while. Do I need to do anything court wise to keep myself out of hot water or should I leave that up to the employer/owner?

Thanks for the help.

- Sean

PS - I learn so much from these forums. So thanks. I'm in high school now and almost don't even want to go to college because I could get better advice from reading books, reading information online, ordering tax booklets and looking through those, and going through a few different interships without paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to listen to lectures.

I did have an intern once and the college helped me through all the red tape. The intern is basically an employee who gets paid very little or nothing,b ut workers comp applies as if they were an employee.
